Suicide Prevention

No Hawk ever needs to go it alone. Many people have thoughts about suicide at some point in their lives. In fact, 1 in 10 college students report having thought about suicide in the last year. For most people these thoughts do not lead to actions, but they can be very serious and represent a real danger. If you are having thoughts of suicide, please reach out now.

How to Get Help

  • If you are at immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • You can contact Counseling Services at (402) 844-7277 or (402) 844-7272 to request an emergency appointment.
  • You can call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at(800) 784-2433 which provides free and anonymous assistance 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Individuals in Region 4 can call the CARE Line Crisis Care and Referral at (888) 370-7003 to be connected to 24-hour crisis intervention, stabilization, and assessment.

Helping Someone Else?

Talking about suicide is one of the best ways to prevent suicide. You can follow these tips on how to have a conversation with the person you are concerned about. One common myth about suicide is that talking about it will somehow put the idea in their heads or cause them to act on it. However, letting someone know they are cared for and that they can get help can literally save their life.

Suicide Survivors

A suicide survivor is someone who has lost a friend, family member, or loved one to suicide. Below is a list of local and national resources for individuals whose lives have been impacted by suicide.

  • The LOSS Team, Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors; The LOSS Team is available to meet with family, friends, or anyone affected by the suicide of someone they love. LOSS Team may occur at any time; immediately following a suicide or at a later date. (402) 750-8148;
