Headstones and History-Tales
-
The Irish have always loved a good story, and in a prairie town begun by Irish settlers, a few of those good stories are sure to be found at the local cemetery. Instructor Natalie Butterfield will draw on insider knowledge, with family going back 140 years here, to share “the stories behind the stones” at the historic O’Neill Cemetery. Besides answering general questions like “What’s with those concrete tree trunks?”, you will hear tales of heroism, hilarity, and undying love. Meet men who risked their lives in dedication to duty, like William Froelich, the remarkable Kearns brothers, and hear of a blood feud that lasted beyond the grave. Learn of the saintly Monsignor, Michael Cassidy, and of the Angel of Corregidor, along with rebels, renegades, and ordinary people enduring extraordinary events. You will gain a deeper knowledge of these fascinating personalities and their circumstances in a way that must be experienced to be understood. This class is held in a classroom for discussion and presentation.
-
Headstones and History-Tour
-
Unearth more local history on this walking tour of the O’Neill Cemetery. Captivating tales will be shared as you discover more of “the stories behind the stones”. Wander among the graves of the famous and infamous while learning about the challenges faced over the years, headstone customs, and other details about the personalities who have been laid to rest here (It is strongly recommended to attend Headstones and History-Tales prior to registering for this Tour class). This class will meet at the O’Neill Cemetery for a walking tour.
