NORFOLK, Neb. – From encouraging fellow students to register to vote to helping at the annual Spooktacular before Halloween, the Northeast Community College SLA members like to stay active.
The Northeast SLA (Student Leadership Association) provided an update on its activities during the latest Board of Governors meeting on Thursday, Nov. 14. Prior to the meeting, the SLA officers and representatives had lunch with board members and cabinet members.
SLA conducts several services projects each year. One being considered is what is known as a “charging bench,” in which benches provide light, have coverings from the weather, offer free Wi-Fi, and provide free charging to students.
The benches are solar powered and funded in part through panel advertising.
Among other things, SLA provides activities for students. Studies show that students who are more engaged on average perform better academically and socially. Some of the ideas under consideration include an international student trip to the zoo, sponsoring a color run or marathon, a concert every two years and goat yoga.
Other upcoming SLA activities include adding pickleball lines to the outside of the tennis and basketball courts, having a Christmas social to grow together as a group, and to host an event in January to prepare for officer elections for the 2024-25 year. SLA members report that pickleball has become popular on campus.
SLA members also asked board members about things they like to do to get rid of stress. Harvard Business Review found that January is the least productive time of year, and 41% of Americans say their mental health gets worse during the holidays. Board and staff members provided a variety of responses.
Board members usually eat with a group of students at each meeting to get an opportunity to learn first-hand about their experiences on campus.
