Northeast Earns CAE Redesignation After Year-Long Process

NORFOLK, Neb. – In an increasingly digital world, understanding cybersecurity is crucial. It helps protect personal information, prevents cyber threats, and ensures a safer online environment for everyone.

Northeast Community College was recently honored for its work in cybersecurity. It is one of just four Nebraska colleges to be designated a Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Defense.

On Oct. 9, Connie Sixta, dean of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, traveled to St. Louis with the Information Technology instructors to receive this redesignation at the National Cybersecurity Education Colloquium. The redesignation was noted recently as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which takes place each October. The designation is used to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and staying safe online.

Northeast had the designation for the past five years and earned it for another five years. Earning the designation is a lengthy process.

Brad Vogt, Information Technology instructor, said mentor institutions who are trained helped with the review process.

Northeast was reviewed by multiple other colleges and a consortium. The Department of Homeland Security used to be involved, but now it is the FBI primarily.

Among other things, they make sure Northeast is offering the right programs and its cybersecurity is up to date. Peer reviewers also assisted Northeast to employ best practices.

Security is emphasized continuously at Northeast. The college shares the latest security threats with several organizations and receives information on any security threats others are encountering, even if it is across the globe.

The CAE redesignation was part of a celebration during Cybersecurity Awareness Month. It included a special day in Union 73 when students, faculty and staff could participate in cyber games, learn about IT programs and meet the Northeast IT faculty.

There was widespread interest in cybersecurity during the event, especially among students.
