Three Groups Keep the Toes Tappin During Northeast Fall Pop Concert

NORFOLK, Neb. – From Billy Joel to Van Morrison, with some Disney, a few blues songs and all that jazz, there was a mixture of offerings with a few dance steps thrown in for good measure on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Community College.

The occasion was the annual Northeast Fall Pop Concert at the Cox Activities Center.

The Northeast Singers Express, an audition swing choir that performs on campus and selected locations during the academic year, opened with a variety of numbers, including some from the Big Band era. They ranged from “Sing, Sing, Sing” to more current musicals from Broadway, including “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked.”

Margaret Schultz, music instructor and choral activities director, is the director of the Northeast Singers Express. On Sunday, Nov. 3, she accompanied them on piano.

The Northeast Jazz Machine is an audition jazz band that performs at Northeast basketball games and performs at Northeast Community College concerts. Several of the instrumentalists were featured in solos during their performances on Sunday.

Finally, the Northeast Area Jazz Ensemble (NAJE), incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1980, performed. NAJE is a registered nonprofit that performs for donations around the area and then turns those donations into scholarship opportunities.

Kevin McLouth, instrumental music instructor/director of instrumental activities, is the director of the Northeast Jazz Machine and NAJE. He also performed with NAJE.
