NORFOLK – Auditions for a musical comedy that has been a hit on Broadway will take place at Northeast Community College, with anyone from college students to members of the community invited to try out.
“We are really excited about this one,” said Adam Peterson of Northeast Community College. “The show is called, ‘Company,’ and it has won Tonys (Tony Awards) on Broadway in the last couple of years. It just continued to re-emerge on Broadway in different forms over the years.”
The Stephen Sondheim production began in 1971. Auditions will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 21-22, at 7 p.m. at the Cox Activities Center Theater on the Northeast campus.
“It has gorgeous music and a smaller cast, and it is a lot of fun,” Peterson said. “The cast will include several couples.”
The play centers on a man who is turning 35. All his friends are married. It features a look back at his search for love and marriage, while he looks at his birthday cake. There are multiple settings and many quick design changes to make it work.
Peterson, the Northeast communications and theater instructor, will do design for the play, with Libby McKay serving as the director. The musical will kick off the 2024-25 Northeast and Norfolk Community Theatre season.
Northeast building construction students will build the sets.
So, what happens if a person is interested in trying out, but can’t sing?
“That’s not a problem. We have people who will train you how to sing. So even if you don’t have that trained voice but love to sing in the shower or wherever, that’s not an issue. There are people who will train you.”
