Public invited to try out for next Northeast play, ‘Silent’

NORFOLK, Neb. – Every year, Northeast Community College theater students take the lead role in the fourth play of the school year.

But that doesn’t mean the public isn’t needed. In fact, members of the public are encouraged to try out for one of the parts during auditions for “Silence.”

Auditions will be on Monday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Cox Activities Center Theater. The play by Moira Buffini will be directed by the 15-year veteran instructor Adam Peterson. Performances will be April 25-28.

Peterson, a Northeast theatre and communications instructor, teaches a play production course each spring semester.

“The first half of the course, the students are learning how to design things. They learn how to design the show. The second half of the course, they actually build the show. It is produced by students through that play production course.”

Six actors will be needed for “Silence.”

“I do like to open auditions up to the public to get a wider range and keep the students on their toes a bit. For this production, we are looking for one type of warrior character, who is a large warrior character.”

Other characters include a princess, a handmaiden, a 14-year-old young person, an English king from the late 900s and a priest character. There is no set number of parts for students or the public.

All the students already are inherently involved in the play through the course. But if if someone wants to get involved, but not be on the stage, there are plenty of parts behind the scenes.

“We’re looking for people who want to take part in costuming, building things or wherever their interest may lie,” Peterson said.

To keep things fresh, Peterson is known for changing his style or production. Over the years, his shows have been quite varied, with this one taking place in medieval England, including Vikings.

So, for anyone interested in meeting theater students, learning about auditions, signing up for backstage work or making new friends, show up for the auditions on Feb. 12.
