Northeast hosts Classic cattle show over Thanksgiving weekend

NORFOLK, Neb. – While many Americans think about turkey over the Thanksgiving weekend, exhibitors from four states focused on cattle during the 38th annual Northeast Community College Classic Livestock show.

Michael Roeber, Northeast agriculture/livestock judging instructor and event organizer, said exhibitors from Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Kansas took part in the two-day cattle show at the Chuck M. Pohlman Agriculture Complex in Norfolk. The event included a market show and a breeding show, along with showmanship.

Roeber said the market portion of the show featured steers and heifers that will be ready for market next summer/fall as part of 4-H and FFA projects. The show is hosted by the Northeast Livestock Judging Team as a fundraiser for the team. Some Northeast students also showed in the event.

The judge for the market show was Cory Thomsen of Madison, S.D. The judge of the breeding show was Miles Stagemeyer of Page.

A total of 104 head were exhibited in the market show. The Champion Market Animal was a Crossbred shown by Hadley Dunklau, Wayne, with Cade Stratman, West Point, showing the Reserve Champion Market Animal with another Crossbreed.

Other placements include the Third Place Market Animal – Dayton Weaver, Moville, Iowa, (Charolais); Fourth Place Market Animal – Collin Vrbka, Shelby, (Chianina); Fifth Place Market Animal – Haidyn Suhr, Anita, Iowa, (Chianina); Sixth Place Market Animal – Sage Stoltz, Elgin, (Market Heifer); and Seventh Place Market Animal – Wyatt Dunklau, Wayne, (Maine Anjou). 

A total of 166 breeding heifers were exhibited at the show. The Supreme Breeding Heifer was shown by Landon Tibken, Wiota, Iowa, (Maintainer). The Reserve Champion Breeding Heifer was a Foundation Simmental shown by Hattie McCollom, Colo, Iowa.

Other placements were Third Place Breeding Heifer – Adam Alfs, Shickley, (Simmental); Fourth Place Breeding Heifer – Olivia Beeson, Kingsley, Iowa, (Angus); Fifth Place Breeding Heifer – Avery Vondrak, Hinton, Iowa, (Foundation Simmental); Sixth Place Breeding Heifer – Henry McCollom, Colo, Iowa, (Maine Angus); and Seventh Place Breeding Heifer -- Logan Tibken, Wiota, Iowa, (Maintainer).

Market Show Division Results

The Champion Market Heifer was shown by Sage Stolz, Elgin, with the Reserve Champion Market Heifer shown by Josie Ritter, Beemer.

The Champion Charolais Steer was shown by Dayton Weaver, Moville, Iowa, with the Reserve Champion Charolais Steer shown by Alexis Billeter, Loomis

The Champion Chianina Steer was shown by Collin Vrbka, Shelby, with the Reserve Champion Chianina Steer shown by Haidyn Suhr, Anita, Iowa.

The Champion Hereford Steer was shown by Weston Stemick, Pierce, with Wyatt Stemick, Pierce, showing the Reserve Champion Hereford Steer. The Champion Mini Hereford Steer was shown by Claire Christensen, Linden, Iowa.

 The Champion Limousin Steer was shown by Sutton Murphy, Arlington, S.D.

 The Champion Maine Anjou Steer was shown by Wyatt Dunklau, Wayne, with the Reserve Champion Maine Anjou shown by Josie Ritter, Beemer.

The Champion Red Angus Steer was shown by Brody Nihsen, Panama, Iowa. 

The Champion Shorthorn Steer was shown by Brooke Hansen, Laurel, with the Reserve Champion Shorthorn Steer shown by Cayden Holan, Pierce.

The Champion Shorthorn Plus Steer was shown by Adam Alfs, Shickley, with the Reserve Champion Shorthorn Plus Steer shown by Cassidy Stratman, West Point.

The Champion Simmental Steer was shown by Dayton Weaver, Moville, Iowa, with Cloie Burce, Emerson, Iowa, showing the Reserve Champion Simmental Steer.

The Champion Crossbred Steer was shown by Hadley Dunklau, Wayne, with the Reserve Champion Crossbred Steer shown by Cade Stratman, West Point.

The Champion Angus Heifer was shown by Olivia Beeson, Kingsley, Iowa, with the Reserve Champion Angus Heifer shown by Addi Crouse, Belgrade.

The Champion Charolais Heifer was shown by Layton Tibken, Wiota, Iowa, with the Reserve Champion Composite Charolais Heifer shown by Beau Thompson, Pender. 

The Champion Composite Charolais Heifer was shown by Logan Tibken, Wiota, Iowa, with the Reserve Champion Composite Charolais Heifer shown by Madison Borg, Concord. 

The Champion Chianina Heifer was shown by Bailee McCollom, Colo, Iowa, with the Reserve Champion Chianina Heifer shown by Briggs Crouse, Belgrade.

The Champion ChiAngus Heifer was shown by Gentry Murphy, Arlington, S.D.

The Champion Balancer Heifer was shown by Kaedin Waugh, Indianola.
