Alum helps Food Pantry get freezer

Alum helps Food Pantry get freezer

NORFOLK, Neb. -- A 2015 graduate of Northeast Community College is helping current Northeast students with a donation from his business.
Trevor Werner, who owns Norfolk Hometown with his wife, Keri, provided a new 18 cubic-foot upright Frigidaire freezer to the Northeast Community College Food Pantry at less than half the cost.

The remaining cost was covered by Daycos4Good grant funding.

The freezer has been delivered and set up, and Gina Krysl, director of student care and outreach, said it was already filled with donations of pork loins, biscuits, pot pies, hot pockets, and more for students when they arrived on the Northeast campus for the first day of classes of the Fall Semester 2023-24.

“We are so happy to have more freezer space,” Krysl said. “It will really help us be able to expand our options for students and give us the capacity to take on more donations.”

The Northeast Food Pantry provides food and personal products for students, both on and off campus. Krysl says the food is especially helpful for students who stay on campus over the weekend and through holidays, when regular college food service is limited or not available.

Trevor and Keri Werner’s business was formerly a Sears Hometown Store. They purchased it in December 2021, and were told a year later that Sears was closing all its Hometown Stores, including the Werners’ at 2110 Market Lane.

In February of 2023, the Werners cut all ties with Sears and began operating as simply “Norfolk Hometown.” Werner said they still carry appliances, but also furniture, clothing, bedding and other items.

“We like to help out in the community,” Werner said, “and as an alum, I wanted to support Northeast.”
