Northeast business students earn 27 awards at state collegiate business leaders conference

KEARNEY, Neb. – Several business and information technology students at Northeast Community College have qualified for the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Collegiate National Conference this summer in Atlanta, GA, after qualifying at the state level recently.

n all, the students earned 27 awards at the State Leadership Conference in Kearney, including six first place and eight second place honors.

“Our competitors, who placed at the top of their respective categories, will be moving on to the National Leadership Conference in Atlanta in June,” said Angie Shaffer, business instructor, and Northeast FBLA Collegiate advisor. 
The Northeast team competed against many four-year schools including the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska-Kearney, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Midland University, Chadron State College, Peru State College, Wayne State College, and York College. Other two-year colleges at the conference included McCook Community College, North Platte Community College, and Southeast Community College. 

Shaffer said FBLA Collegiate focuses on developing leadership, communication and team skills in its members as well as giving them an opportunity to meet and network with other FBLA Collegiate members at the local, state and national levels.  

“FBLA Collegiate places an emphasis on helping students transition to the business world,” she said. “There are approximately 11,000 members on college campuses across the country.  

Cara Hoehne, business instructor, also serves as a Northeast FBLA Collegiate advisor.

Students placing first and second at the conference automatically qualify to compete at PBL’s National Leadership Conference, June 22-25 in Atlanta.

Cyber Security – 1st - Mori Lopez.

Management Analysis & Decision Making – 1st - Gracelyn Baumert, Eli McPhillips, Emma Nelson.

Sales Presentation – 1st - Dayci Luttrell, Jordyn Steffen.

Small Business Management Plan – 1st - Olivia Meaux, 2nd – JennaRose Zierke.

Accounting Case Competition – 2nd - Gracelyn Baumert, Kyra Louthan, Jordyn Steffen.

Desktop Publishing – 2nd – Elizabeth Valerio Chairez.

Emerging Business Issues – 2nd – Kyra Louthan, Rebeca Martinez, Olivia Meaux.
