SLA raises funds for animal shelter and provides blankets to veterans

NORFOLK, Neb. – Plates were full for members of the Northeast Community College Student Leadership Association (SLA) during the fall semester. In addition to their classroom work, they spent a considerable amount of time organizing and running activities at the end of the semester for the benefit of others – both two and four legged recipients.

SLA’s signature project was a Bake Sale and Mystery Box Sale to raise funds for the Animal Shelter of Northeast Nebraska. The event, in the College’s Union 73, collected $500 for the shelter. The students were able to make treats for the bake sale in the kitchen of The Stables, which is owned by Black Cow Fat Pig. They made items such as fudge, toffee, cookies, Oreo balls and hot cocoa bombs. The mystery boxes included items ranging from puzzles to foot massagers to SLA mugs.

Additionally, SLA members continued their annual Blanket Making for the Norfolk Veteran’s Home project. They made and delivered tie blankets to five Veterans Home members as holiday gifts.

“The students loved making the blankets for the veterans,” said Carissa Kollath, director of Student Activities. “However, due to COVID protocols, we weren’t able to hand deliver the blankets to the veterans like in past years, so we had to leave them with someone at front door.”

Blanket making has been an SLA tradition that first began in 2008.

Members of Northeast Community College Student Leadership Association include Rose Graham, Pierce, president; Emily Carstens, Creighton, vice president; Hannah Stahl, Potter, secretary; and Alyssa Daw, Fullerton, sophomore senator. Kollath and Paul Muncy, history/geography instructor, serve as advisors.

“This year’s team may be small, but they’re mighty,” Kollath said. “They have worked hard to focus on philanthropy projects and giving back to our campus and to the community.”
