South Dakota poet to read at Northeast Visiting Writers event

NORFOLK, Neb. – A South Dakota poet will be featured during the next Visiting Writers Series of the fall semester at Northeast Community College in Norfolk.

Jim Reese will read from his work during a virtual presentation on Wed. Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. His presentation may be viewed through Zoom at northeast.zoom.us/j/5864654319.

Reese is an associate professor of English and director of the Great Plains Writers’ Tour at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D. His poetry and prose have been widely published, and he has performed readings at venues throughout the country, including the Library of Congress and San Quentin Prison.

His books include These Trespasses (The Backwaters Press, 2005), ghost on 3rd (New York Quarterly Books, 2010), and Really Happy! (New York Quarterly Books, 2014). A fourth collection, Dancing Room Only, is forthcoming by New York Quarterly Books in 2021. His first book on nonfiction, Bone Chalk, was published by Stephen F. Austin State University Press in 2019. 

Reese’s awards include first place in the 2018 Allen Ginsberg Poetry Awards, a 2018 Distinguished Achievement Award from Mount Marty College, and a Distinguished Public Service Award in recognition of his exemplary dedication and contributions to the Education Department at the Federal Prison Camp Yankton. In 2017, Reese became a Contractual Education Instructor for the South Dakota Department of Corrections Writing for Reentry Program.

Reese’s appearance is sponsored by the Northeast Community College English Department through its Visiting Writers Series in collaboration with Wayne State College Plains Writers Series. All events are free and open to the public.
