Northeast to observe Veterans Day

Northeast to observe Veterans Day

NORFOLK, NE – Northeast Community College has recognized the nation’s servicemen and women each November, however, Veterans Day will be observed a little differently this year.

Karen Hoefler, assistant registrar, said, in coordination with Bellevue University, they are encouraging the campus community and others to take part in an event that will allow them to express their thanks to veterans.

“Faculty, staff, students and guests are invited to write brief notes to members of the military as we celebrate their service in uniform.”

The event will be held on Veterans Day, Monday November 11, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Hawks Point dining area on the Northeast campus in Norfolk, 801 E. Benjamin Ave.

Notes will be distributed in different ways. Some will go to current military students at Northeast, others will be taken across the street to members of the Norfolk Veterans Home, while the rest will be sent to Operation Gratitude, an organization that distributes notes and cards to men and women in uniform, both domestically and across the world.

“This is an excellent way to let our veterans know how much we appreciate their service and the sacrifices they have made to protect our country and defend our freedoms,” Hoefler said. “It is our hope that the notes with personal messages will resonate with veterans, both past and present. While we can’t thank them enough, this small token of gratitude demonstrates that we are thinking of them.”

Northeast choral students, under the direction of Stewart Cramer, director of vocal activities and music instructor, will also perform some patriotic selections at various times throughout the two-hour event.

In addition, the Hawks Point dining area will be open for lunch during that time. There is a fee for the all you can eat buffet meal.
