Northeast in South Sioux City hosts Latino Youth Summit

NORFOLK, NE - Several high school students from Nebraska and Iowa had the opportunity to gather, get motivated and learn more about higher education opportunities at a youth summit held here recently.

The Latino Youth Summit, hosted by the Northeast Community College South Sioux City extended campus, drew over 100 high school students to the conference center at Delta Hotels in South Sioux City.

Students from Wakefield, Homer, Bishop Heelan, Sioux City East, Sioux City West, Sioux City North and South Sioux City high schools attended the event.

Beto Gonzalez, who serves in the gang prevention unit for the Omaha Police Department, and Juan Cangas, of CoolSpeak, LLC, gave the keynote addresses. The students also heard from Dianna Castillo, news director/anchor at KMEG-14; Maria Guzman, teacher at Irving Elementary School; Dr. Juan Munoz, chiropractor/entrepreneur at Inside-Out Chiropractic and co-owner of Brightside Café; and Elda Raulades, office manager at Sedgwick Talley Abstract.

Dr. Cyndi Hanson, executive director of the Northeast Community College South Sioux City extended campus, said Northeast was honored to organize and host the summit.

“Our campus staff were excited about this from the moment we began planning, and it lived up to all expectations. It was incredible to see the students engaged, asking questions and dreaming big. We’ve already heard from school counselors who said the students want to learn more. We will build on this success for future youth summits.”

This is the first year the Latino Youth Summit was held in South Sioux City. Northeast Community College in Norfolk also hosts a Latino Youth Summit, which is sponsored by Nebraska Public Power District.
