This event will inform incoming students and their families of the services offered by the Disability Services staff.
Mary Balaski, director of Disability Services, said incoming students diagnosed with a disability or those who believe they might have a disability, would benefit from learning more about the various accommodations, services and support provided by or coordinated through Disability Services.
Incoming and current Northeast students with chronic health conditions, and students who have benefited from special education programs or were served under 504 plans in high school, are encouraged to attend and bring with them a family member and/or friend. Any individual who has an ongoing medical condition that may affect their participation in their college coursework and/or employment, is also encouraged to attend.
During the meeting, Balaski will explain procedures students must follow to receive accommodations so they can fully participate in courses, services and activities. Current Northeast students will also be sharing their experiences with utilizing accommodations, academic supports and assistive technology.
Before the meeting begins, from 5:30-6 p.m., representatives from the Assistive Technology Partnership Program of Nebraska will demonstrate various devices and software to aid students with studying and accessing education material. Representatives from the TRIO program and Vocational Rehabilitation Services will also be on hand to share information.
Northeast's financial aid office will remain open until 6 p.m. to meet with students and parents.
Balaski referenced the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to define a disability: “The loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the life of the community on an equal level with others due to physical, social, attitudinal and cultural barriers encountered by persons having physical, sensory, psychological, developmental, learning, neurological or other impairments (including the presence in the body of an organism or agent causing malfunction or disease), which may be permanent, temporary, episodic or transitory in nature.”
