TRIO Student Support Services will host the free event on Wednesday, November 8, to coincide with National First Generation College Celebration Day, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. All activities will be held in the Cox Activities Center theatre on the Norfolk campus.
TRIO will unveil a video that spotlights some of Northeast’s first generation students, staff and administrators as well as facilitate a continual conversation about the challenges and triumphs of first-generation college students.
Donna Neeman, director of TRIO Student Support Services, said that anyone who was a first-generation college student themselves, or those who would like to show their support for Northeast’s current first-generation college students, are welcome to attend.
“I’m beyond excited for this national celebration day. Being a first-generation college student is something to be very proud of. These students are changing their family history. About 61 percent of Northeast’s degree-seeking students are first-generation, and we need to celebrate that. They chose to start their life-changing journeys with Northeast because they knew they would have the guidance and support they need while facing the challenges a first generation college student would encounter. I’m honored to be able to watch them succeed.”
The TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO/SSS) program is an academic assistance program funded through TRIO grants by the US Department of Education. It consists of eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities. TRIO/SSS offers its students individual support, personal support and academic support throughout their academic careers.
