Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS)
Tools Required First Day of Classes
Estimated Cost: $2,000-$3,000
Informational note: Students must have all the tools on the required list on the first day of class. Students do not have to buy the items on the optional list, but they are tools that will help in class and will likely be needed by their future employer. For most all the items listed above students can either purchase the item in parentheses or a different brand of tool that matches the description. The items in parentheses are all good choices but are also there to use a reference to compare if you’re shopping around between brands. Some other great quality electrical tool manufactureres are Klein, Greenlee, Southwire, Milwaukee, and Knipex. Most electrical employers require employees to provide their own hand tools (all the tools on the list below) and because of this we encourage students to think about the long-term financial investment of these tools especially the daily used tools such as wire cutters, wire strippers, pliers, allen wenches, and especially the main screwdriver set and purchase them from a reputable brand such as those listed below. (The stripped out $3 screwdriver in the back of the tool drawer is very hard on lab equipment. Please have tools that are in good working condition) For the drill and impact we ask that you get a jobsite grade tool such as Milwaukee, DeWalt, or other favorite brand. (The electrical program uses Milwaukee for other tools and does have a charger that is occasionally available). On other tools such as the torque screwdriver do not spend a lot of money - a generic one is fine. Tools can be purchased online, at a store, at electrical supply houses (Norfolk has Rensenhouse, and Echo) or be used ones (that are in good shape and work) brought from home or bought online. There are lockers available to students to store tools and books overnight. If you choose to use the lockers, you must purchase another keyed or combination lock.

Estimated Cost: $2,500
The following is a list of tools each student is required to obtain and maintain. This list is only a minimum; you might wish to add to it for your convenience. With proper care, these tools will help you earn a living for a long time. If you already have some of these tools, bring them in and your lab instructor will advise you if they meet the requirements. Remember that value is not price alone; a good tool with proper care will last years longer than a cheap tool and will pay for itself many times over. These tools need to be ordered in advance so that you have them by the first day of school. Most of these are specialty tools, which require you to buy them at wholesale suppliers. If there are any questions at all about the tool list, contact Paul or John (HVAC Instructors).

Tools Required First Day of Classes
Estimated Cost: $900-$1,500
The following is equipment and supplies required for training. Please note that there are choices on supplies-lift front helmets, auto darkening helmets, gloves, etc. You may have some of the items listed already. The instructor will advise you if they meet program requirements. Safety equipment is mandatory for all classes because of the nature of the trade. Items need to be ordered in advance (mid-June) so that you have them on first day of class. Most items can be purchased from a welding supply store. Hand tools may be more affordable at other stores. A more professional and safe atmosphere is present when everyone wears the proper attire. Please advise if you have questions. John Knapp 402-844-7201, Norfolk, or Michael McCarthy 402-844-7200, Norfolk. Chance Rohlk, 402-241-6422, South Sioux City.
