What You'll Learn As An Apprentice

  • Weld components in flat, vertical, and overhead positions.
  • Measure dimensions of completed products or workpieces to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Select production equipment according to product specifications.
  • Determine metal or plastic production methods.
  • Operate grinding equipment.
  • Heat material or workpieces to prepare for or complete production.
  • Reshape metal workpieces to established specifications.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities and Courses

Student welding In the apprenticeship program students gain paid, on-the-job training experience working alongside experienced professionals. In addition to hands-on learning opportunities at a jobsite, students grow their knowledge in the classroom. Classroom instruction in the welding apprenticeship includes:

  • WELD 1030 Shielded Metal Arc Welding Basic Theory
  • WELD 1035 Shielded Metal Arc Welding Lab
  • WELD 1040 Gas Metal and Flux Cored Arc Welding Theory
  • WELD 1045 Gas Metal and Flux Cored Arc Welding Lab
  • WELD 1110 Intro to Metals and Inspection
  • WELD 1140 Print Reading & Symbols
  • WELD 1155 Fabrication Equipment and Operation Lab
  • MATH 1020 Technical Mathematics I

Program Details

Apprenticeship is an industry-driven, high quality career pathway where businesses can develop and prepare their future workforce and individuals can obtain paid work experience along with classroom instruction.

520 hours of classroom instruction & approximately 2-3 years of on-the-job learning.

Courses are offered in-person. On-the-job training is offered at an employer site.

Upon completion apprentices are awarded a College Certificate and/or Diploma in Welding and a National Apprenticeship Credential.

Courses follow a traditional college semester schedule and are offered in-person at the Norfolk and South Sioux City campuses. Classes are typically Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
