What You'll Learn As An Apprentice
- Install heating, ventilation, or air conditioning equipment
- Service heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems or components
- Inspect systems to determine if they are operating properly
- Test electrical circuits or components for continuity
- Test pipes, lines, components, and connections for leaks
- Repair or replace defective equipment
Hands-On Learning Opportunities and Courses
In the apprenticeship program students gain paid, on-the-job training experience working alongside experienced professionals. In addition to hands-on learning opportunities at a jobsite, students build their knowledge in the classroom. Classroom instruction in the HVAC Technician apprenticeship includes:
- HVAC Electricity and Controls
- Basic Refrigeration Principles and Air Conditioning
- Heating Technology and Heat Pump Technology
- Commercial Refrigeration and Commercial Air Conditioning
- Building Science and Sheet Metal

1,582.5 hours of classroom instruction and approximately 4 years of on-the-job learning.
Courses are available in-person on the Norfolk campus. On-the-job training is offered at an employer site.

Upon completion apprentices are awarded a National Apprenticeship Credential and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning AAS.

Courses follow a traditional college semester schedule and are offered in-person at the Norfolk campus. Classes are typically Monday through Thursday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM or you can opt for an evening and all day Friday schedule.
