Hawk Star Awards Honors Students, Faculty Member for Achievements

Hundreds of awards were announced or given out during the annual Hawk Star Awards, culminating in the presentation of two student awards and a new faculty award.


Faculty, staff, students and family attended the evening of student achievement awards on Wednesday, April 16, at the Lifelong Learning Center. The event recognizes students from various clubs, organizations and conferences with hundreds of awards earned throughout the year.

This is the sixth year for the Hawk Star Awards, which were preceded by desserts, hors d’oeuvres and refreshments.

The President’s Award is given to a student who meets the following criteria:

  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA
  2. Involvement in two campus activities, clubs, or organizations. Community Service may count as a valid form of campus activity.
  3. Be on the path to graduating with 60+ credits by the end of this semester.

Braden Monke of Arlington; Hannah Gubbels of Winside; Hannah Taylor of Norfolk; Jorge Enrique Raudales of South Sioux City and Parker Clausen of Norfolk were nominated, with Enrique Rauales presented the award.

The Rising Star Award is given to a student who meets the following criteria and is nominated by faculty:

  1. Minimum 3.25 GPA
  2. Involvement in two campus activities, clubs, or organizations. Community Service may count as a valid form of campus activity.
  3. Must be on the path to receiving 24-30 credits by the end of this semester.

Isaiah Saldana of Norfolk was presented with the Rising Star Award. It was noted that he embodies the values of Northeast.

A new award, called the Star Faculty Award, debuted this year, which was a student nominated award to recognize a member of faculty for their excellent service. The students nominated Jen Scheer, Math instructor; Angie Shaffer, Business instructor & FBLA adviser; Lisa Guenther, Early Childhood Education instructor; and Josh Schlote, Veterinary Technician instructor. Schlote earned the award. 

Amanda Nipp, vice president of Student Services; Bobby Frost, associate athletic director; and President Leah Barrett, were among the presenters and speakers.
