NORFOLK, Neb. – Two Northeast Community College students have been selected to participate in the Nebraska Intercollegiate band.
Matthew Schultz, Randolph, will be playing tuba, while Kyler Dean, O’Neill, will be playing euphonium. Both students are members of the Northeast College/Community Concert Band.
Shultz is currently in the Welding program, while Dean is finishing his Utility Line training.
The Nebraska Intercollegiate band is a group made up of students from all the colleges in Nebraska. Students are chosen for their ability and work ethic. They will come together in Lincoln for three days of rehearsal that will culminate in a concert.
Kevin McLouth, Northeast music instructor and director of the College/Community Concert Band, said it is an honor to be chosen.
“Matthew and Kyler are both great students for us at Northeast. They are obviously great musicians, or they would not have been accepted to do this. This is just such a great opportunity and an honor for these students to perform in a group like this. These are the best college musicians in the state of Nebraska.”
The event will create a memory that lasts for the rest of their lives and shows the importance of music in people’s daily lives.
“Neither one is a music major. Kyler will be a utility lineman, and he is just finishing up this year. Matthew is going to move into the workforce in the welding field, but they are excited that they get to keep playing while they are here at Northeast. Obviously, they enjoy it, much like the rest of the Community/Concert Band who come in and perform, representing all sorts of professionals. It’s all about the importance of music in their lives,” McLouth said.
Nebraska Intercollegiate band is held in conjunction with the Nebraska State Bandmaster’s Association convention. The band’s performance on Saturday, March 8, at 11:30 a.m. will be in the Graduate Ballroom and will conclude the NSBA convention.
