NORFOLK, Neb. – The postsecondary landscape is changing with dual enrollment, and one of the instructors who has been part of that movement was honored this week.
Kelli Guenther, Early College Math instructor and Northeast Community College math tutor, was named the US Bank Northeast Community College Adjunct Instructor of the Year on Tuesday, Jan. 7, as part of the college’s Spring Semester In-Service.
Guenther was one of four US Bank honorees who were recognized. Along with the award, honorees also receive a $250 stipend.
Some of Guenther’s high school calculus students from West Point-Beemer, where she teaches, were on hand to help her receive the award. Through dual credit, high school students can earn college credits free while taking courses. The 2024 Dual Enrollment Special Report from the Nebraska Statewide Workforce Educational Reporting System found that students who participate in dual enrollment programs are significantly more likely to pursue higher education compared to their peers who do not.
Leah Barrett, Northeast Community College president, said Guenther’s dedication to her students has left an indelible mark on the West Point-Beemer community and beyond.
“This person possesses a remarkable ability to demystify complex concepts and break them down into manageable steps,” Barrett said. “Using innovative teaching methods, an environment is created where students not only grasp mathematical principles but also develop the confidence and mindset necessary to approach challenges with resilience and determination. Her ability to make a subject that many students find overwhelming into something accessible and even enjoyable is truly a gift.”
One former student said, “When I first entered college algebra, I was not sure if I could pass the class. I struggled with a few rough test scores and felt discouraged at times. However, when I needed help, I was able to reach out… and she was always there to guide me. Her support made a huge difference, and she took the time to explain concepts in a way that made sense to me. Thanks to her encouragement and patience, I gained the confidence I needed to succeed.”
Other students shared how well they felt for their coursework, crediting her rigorous teaching methods, ability to simplify processes, and her dedication to their development. Her commitment goes beyond the classroom; she regularly invests additional time and effort to ensure that her students’ needs are met.
“As you can see, Kelli’s passion for teaching is evident in everything she does,” Barrett said. “She is more than just a teacher — she is a mentor, a guide, and a steadfast supporter of her students.”
