Ribbon cutting ceremony, open house set for new CTE center in West Point

WEST POINT, NE – The partners and organizations that have worked over the past three-years to establish a new career and technical education facility in West Point will gather at the site later this month to celebrate its opening.

A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Donald E. Nielsen Career and Technical Education Center, 200 W. Washington St., will be held on Tuesday, March 19, at 10 a.m. An open house and tours will be held immediately following the ceremony.

The center is located directly north of the Nielsen Community Center, 200 Anna Stalp Ave.

The 16,000 square foot facility is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of West Point and its area education partners that is designed to provide opportunities for career and technical education for area high school students, Northeast Community College students and regional employers who desire workforce development training.

Programming in the new center will focus on areas that include building construction, manufacturing and welding. Computer and health sciences classes will be held in the Shirley and Jake Weber wing of the Nielsen Community Center.

In addition to college-level credit programming, business and industry customized training opportunities in areas such as truck driving, safety and entrepreneurship and leadership are being planned to spur economic development and support employment opportunities in east central Nebraska. This will be led by Northeast’s Center for Enterprise.

Other education partners in the collaborative effort include Wayne State College and Pathways to Tomorrow (P2T), a consortium of eight high schools. Current P2T members include Bancroft-Rosalie, Emerson-Hubbard, Howells-Dodge, Lyons-Decatur Northeast, Oakland-Craig, Pender, West Point-Beemer and Wisner-Pilger.

Northeast classes are scheduled to begin this month with the P2T classes starting in August.

In addition, the Northeast Community College Board of Governors will hold its monthly meeting in the Nielsen Community Center on March 19. The regular meeting will begin at 3 p.m.
