Hawks volleyball team finishes 7th at NJCAA Nationals

NORFOLK, NE - Northeast Community College students, faculty and staff cheer on the Northeast Hawks volleyball team as it scores in point in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Tournament in Charleston, WV.

The #8 Hawks defeated #9 North Dakota State College of Science in five sets Thursday afternoon 3-2 (25-14, 18-25, 26-24, 18-25, 15-9).

For Northeast, Kalli Brester recorded 24 kills and 28 digs; Hannah Heppner had 13 kills and six blocks, Savannah Nelson finished with 50 assists; Delaney Bet had 20 digs; and Gabriela Barbosa finished with 18 digs.

Northeast had a difficult time fending off #1 Coffeyville Community College in a quarterfinal match Thursday night losing in straight sets (25-15, 25-21, 25-20).

Brester and Wehrbein had seven kills each, while Nelson added 22 assists and 10 digs.

The Hawks lost to South Mountain Community College in a consolation match Friday afternoon 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17. Northeast, however, pulled off a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 26-16, 25-20) victory over Lincoln Land Community College to take 7th place in the national tournament.  

“The girls played well. I am proud of all they accomplished this year,” said Amanda Schultze, Hawks coach.

The Hawks conclude their season with an overall record of 21-15 and an 8-1 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference record. Northeast was a perfect 11-0 at home. The Hawks lose five sophomores to graduation, but return seven freshmen for next season.

Coffeyville went on to win the national tournament with a 3-0 win over Parkland Community College.
