Northeast ESL instructor honored with teaching award

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE - An international organization for women educators has honored a Northeast Community College English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor for her hard work and dedication. Ana Davalos, South Sioux City, was presented with the Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Educational Excellence Award. DKG is an international organization for women educators.

The local Mu chapter is comprised of women educators from the Sioux City (IA) area.

Originally from Mexico, Davalos has been an instructor in the Adult Education program at Northeast’s South Sioux City extended campus since 2014. She teaches beginning ESL classes and Civics/Citizenship. She also is a BEST Plus test administrator and also works as Adult Education’s instructor aid. This year, five of her students have earned their U.S. citizenship.

Davalos is herself a Northeast graduate. After earning her General Education Development (GED®) diploma at Northeast in 2008, she continued her education and graduated in 2013 with an administrative assistant diploma.

She is the parent of three daughters: Ana, Estrella and Gabriela.

“Ana is one of the most positive, energetic and student-centered individuals I’ve had the pleasure to work with,” said Nancy Schultz, director of Adult Education at Northeast.  “I am very proud of her and her accomplishments.”

In addition to South Sioux City, Northeast’s Adult Education department offers ESL courses in Ainsworth, Bartlett, Norfolk, O’Neill, Wakefield, Wayne, West Point and Wisner.
