Graphic Design Portfolio Show is May 4

NORFOLK, NE – Students in Northeast Community College’s graphic design program will be showcasing their work during the programs’ annual portfolio show. This year’s event will be held Friday, May 4, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Northeast campus in Norfolk. It is open to the public.

The purpose of the show is for the graphic design students to showcase their work to family, friends and prospective employers,” said Emily Gonnella, of Dawson, a graphic design student. “We have worked on a variety of projects like page layout, brand identity, proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-Design that we will showcase. The show also allows us to develop our interview and interpersonal communication skills with prospective clients.”

Jeanette Johnson, publications coordinator in Northeast’s marketing department and adjunct instructor, said the students have gathered their best and favorite projects from their previous classes and have spent most of the semester refining and preparing those pieces for the show.

“This Portfolio Show is meant to be the culmination of their college careers at Northeast and prepare them for entering the real world.”

In addition to creating a portfolio, the students developed personal resumes, cover letters, and business cards, as well as the promotional materials for the show.

Gonnella said she has had an “excellence” experience in her time in the program.

“The instructors are very understanding and answer all of your questions. You learn a lot in the short time you are here. It’s especially nice for draft designers because you don’t necessarily need a bachelor’s degree for higher up jobs if you have a strong enough portfolio. You can basically go anywhere.”

Northeast’s AAS graphic design program emphasizes technical skill development using industry standard design software, as well as developing knowledge in the principles of design and artistic expression. Internships are also available with area businesses.
