Northeast softball goes 2-2 in weekend road games

AUSTIN, MN - The Northeast Community College softball team finished their weekend series here, 2-2. On Saturday, the Hawks swept Ellsworth Community College, 2-1 and 11-1. On Sunday, the Hawks fell to Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), 8-0 and 11-2.

In Saturday’s first game against Ellsworth, Hawks Coach Iris Woodhead said her team struggled with late-game execution. In the seventh inning, Northeast had runners on first and third with one out and were doubled off at first base.

“Alayna (Allen) was in a zone for us, however, and we were able to shut them down at the top of the eighth and push a runner across in the eighth. It was a great competitive game.”

In game one, Savannah Robertson went 2-for-4 with a run and two doubles, while Jade Long was 1-for-4 with a run. Allen (5-2) earned the win, allowing one run, three hits, two hits by pitch and one walk, and collecting 13 strikeouts in eight innings.

“In game two, we kept the momentum rolling and came out on top,” said Woodhead. “Chandler (Hehnke) pitched well in game two.”

In the second game against Ellsworth, Emily Sherstone was 2-for-3 with three runs, two base on balls and a stolen base. Long went 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBIs, a double and three base on balls. Hehnke (3-9) had the win in four innings, with one run and three hits allowed, four walks and six strikeouts.

On Sunday, the Hawks faced DMACC, who are currently ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll.

“I thought we played a tough game one against a top-notch pitcher,” Woodhead said. “In game two, we unfortunately didn’t play Northeast softball and didn’t play the game the right way. It looked like we gave up after the first inning, and I’m very disappointed in us and our effort and attitude.”

Game one saw Robertson going 1-for-2 with a double. Hehnke took the loss.

In game two against DMACC, Robertson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI. Rosario Garcia was 1-for-2 with a run, and Teanne Edens finished 1-for-2. Allen had the loss.

The Hawks (14-16 overall, 3-5 in conference) will continue region play on Tuesday when they travel to Cedar Rapids, IA, to face #3 Kirkwood Community College at 2 and 4 p.m.
