Allen throws no hitter; Hawks split with Central

COLUMBUS, NE – Tuesday was a pretty good day for Alayna Allen. On the same day the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference named her Division II Softball Athlete of the Week, the left handed pitcher for Northeast Community College threw a no-hitter in the Hawks 3-0 win in the first game of a doubleheader against Central Community College.

“We were able to witness something spectacular on the mound today in Alayna. She was locked in and threw an amazing game,” said Iris Woodhead, Northeast coach. “All credit goes to her and her teammates working behind her in making some very nice defensive plays.”

Woodhead said she is proud of Allen (3-1) for her hard work this season, both with pitching and recovering from foot surgery in December.

“What an amazing accomplishment,” Woodhead said.

Allen, of Columbus, recorded 13 strikeouts and one walk. Emily Sherstone and Jade Long both went 2-for-4 for Northeast in game one with Sherstone scoring two runs. Savannah Robertson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Chandler Hehnke was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Woodhead said game two was a different story.

“Seven runs in two innings is terrible and leaves a very bad taste in your mouth, especially when only three of the runs are earned. We need to be better on the mound and better on defense. We looked like we had all the pressure in the world on us and everyone kept looking to hand it off to someone else. That’s (playing) scared softball and we are better than that.”

The Hawks were able to push back and put together some rallies, but fell short in the seventh inning. Northeast had the bases loaded with no outs and was down by four, but then recorded two strikeouts looking. Central took the game 9-7.

“Again scared softball. Rosario Garcia came up big with a two out single, but we fell short after that,” Woodhead said. “I liked our effort in the last three innings, but we need to play complete softball games.”

Robertson was 3-for-3 with a home run; Long scored two runs on 2-for-3 hitting; Tera Paczosa was 1-for-3 with an RBI; and Mariah Jensen was 2-for-4.

Moriah Payston (6-4) took the loss.

Northeast (11-11) will be in action on Friday as the team travels to Boone, IA, for a doubleheader against Des Moines Area Community College. Games will be at 2-4 p.m.
