Northeast softball splits home opener with Central

NORFOLK, NE – The Northeast Community College softball team split its home opener doubleheader Tuesday against Central Community College.

In the first game, Central beat Northeast 8-6.

For the Hawks, Tera Paczosa was 3-4 with a run, an RBI and a double; Shyanne Sutton was 2-3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base; Emily Sherstone hit 2-3 scoring a run and three stolen bases; Alayna Allen was 2-4 with an RBI; and Savannah Robertson was 1-4 with a run, two RBIs and a stolen base.

Chandler Hehnke (2-4) took the loss for Northeast.

In the night cap, the Hawks came back and beat the Raiders 7-5. Moriah Payton (3-2) was the winning pitcher.

Allen was 3-4 with a homerun and three RBIs; Sherstone was 2-3 scoring two runs and a stolen base; and Robertson was 1-3 with a run and three RBIs.

“We’ve been talking about keeping our focus for game two of doubleheaders. Well, we did a great job of keeping our focus and competing in game two,” said Iris Woodhead, Northeast coach. “Moriah Payton pitched great and got herself out of some tough spots. Defense struggled in the first inning after two straight errors, but we pulled ourselves up well. I liked to see that, that was a good step for us.’

Woodhead said the first game was a different story. She said it was tough and difficult for her players to get out of a hole.

“Not going after easy lead outs, 0-2 three run homerun, running through stop signs on the bases… we need to be better as we progress during our season. Game one felt like a step back. We will get back at it tomorrow and continue to work on getting better daily.

The Hawks (5-7) hit the road on Wednesday heading to Council Bluffs, IA, for another doubleheader. They will take on John A. Logan College (IL) at 2 p.m. and Iowa Western Community College at 4 p.m.
