“We came out a little flat against Jefferson,” said Iris Woodhead, Hawks coach. “We faced a pitcher we should have hit but struggled with our timing. Once we faced someone who threw a little harder, we were able to put a few hits together.”
Woodhead said that although the team worked on timing and their power zone over the winter, they struggled to control their swings.
Jefferson College had nine hits to Northeast’s eight. Savannah Robertson finished 2-for-4 with a run, double, and RBI. Jade Long went 3-for-4 with a double and RBI, and Mariah Jenson (1-for-3) had a double. Moriah Payton (1-2) took the loss.
Woodhead said she was pleased with the team’s adjustments and the growing confidence of the freshman lineup in game two, but five errors and a number of mental errors gave Neosho the edge.
Neosho County outhit the Hawks 13-11. Emily Sherstone went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a double. Tera Paczosa finished 2-for-4 with a run, double and RBI, and Inese Uribe went 2-for-4 with a run. Chandler Hehnke (0-2) had the loss.
“We have to do a better job of allowing ourselves the opportunity to compete,” Woodhead said. “Little things add up to big things. This can be a positive or a negative for a team. In this game, it was a negative, as we kept giving Neosho little chances, and they were able to come away with the win.
Northeast (1-5) will continue their Kansas road games today when they face Friends University JV in Wichita at 2 and 4 p.m.
