Women's basketball ends regular season with win over Marshalltown

NORFOLK, NE - The Northeast Community College women's basketball team capped regular season play here tonight, defeating Marshalltown Community College, 65-57.

Matt Svehla, Hawks coach, said the first half was a series of ups and downs. Northeast outscored the Tigers 15-9 in the first quarter but only had six points in the second to Marshalltown's eight.

"Our second quarter was not very good offensively. Both teams were a bit sluggish in the first half and both got going in the second. We shot the ball much better in the second half, and that allowed us to open the game up a bit."

Northeast had a 33 percent field goal percentage in the first half and improved to 44 percent in the second half.

Sierra Bell totaled 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists on the night. Mykala Baylor netted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Irene Sanz had 11 points, while Kori Fischer and Jade Blackburn had six each.

Northeast finished regular season play with a 23-4 record. They will face Marshalltown again on Wednesday in Norfolk for a first-round Region XI playoff game. Tipoff will be at 5 p.m. at the Cox Activities Center.
