Northeast women improve to 18-2 following win over Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, IA – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team improved to 18-2 following a road win Saturday over Marshalltown Community College, 67-43.

Hawks Coach Matt Svehla said the team started slow, but gained momentum by the end of the first half.

"We had a tight 1st quarter, but we found a way to get some breathing room by halftime. It sure helped that Baileigh Nuzum hit a three-pointer at the first quarter buzzer and Teagan Pompa got us a layup at the end of the second period. We played a good third quarter where we outscored them 25-8.”

Northeast also played well defensively and shot 52-percent on the night.

Sierra Bell led the Hawks with 11-points while Jade Blackburn finished with nine. Irene Sanz, Mykala Baylor and Lauren Hunstad had eight points apiece; Nuzum and Pompa had six each.

Northeast travels to Winnebago on Tuesday to face Little Priest Tribal College. Game time is 5 p.m.
