Women's basketball goes 2-0 at Iowa Western Classic

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA - The Northeast Community College women's basketball team got back on the winning track this weekend, winning two games at the Iowa Western Community College Classic. The Hawks defeated Dordt College JV, 70-36, on Friday and Northwest Kansas Technical College, 75-68, on Saturday.

"It was good to get two wins over the weekend," said Matt Svehla, Hawks coach. "In our game Friday, we had a chance to play all of our players. Saturday's game ended up being a bit closer than it should have been because we just did not finish like we needed to. It was a good effort, but we had some turnovers down the stretch and put (Northwest Tech) to the foul line too often."

In Friday's victory over Dordt, Irene Sanz and Judit Valls led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points each. Mykala Baylor put up ten, and Jerrica Neal, seven.

On Saturday, Sierra Bell put up an impressive 22 points, while Sanz and Baylor recorded 14 each, and Lauren Hunstad, 11. Sanz led assists with five, and Vals recorded 13 rebounds.

"We have one game left before our holiday break, so hopefully we finish this first semester in good fashion," Svehla said.

Northeast (13-1) will host Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday at the Cox Activities Center on the Norfolk campus. Game time is 5 p.m.
