Northeast women improve to 10-0

FORT DODGE, IA – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team improved to 10-0 following a 68-54 victory over North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) Friday, the first day of the Iowa Central Community College Classic here.

Both teams came into the game undefeated with 9-0 records. NIACC is ranked #9 in the National Junior College Association Division II poll and has been averaging 109 points per game.

“This was a good test for both teams,” said Matt Svehla, Northeast coach. “NIACC is an explosive team that can really score in bunches and they have put up huge numbers on the scoreboard this season. We did not defend perfectly, but we did a good job of contesting shots and making them work for their looks.”

On the offensive end, the Hawks shot 53-percent from the field and finished eight of 16 from the three-point line.

Svehla said the three-point field goals were pivotal because the Hawks had some turnovers and only shot 12 of 26 from the free throw line.

“Jerrica Neal carried us in scoring during the first half with 17 points and Mykala Baylor scored 10 for us in the 2nd half. Jerrica was perfect shooting the ball tonight and her first half scoring was needed.”

Northeast led 34-17 at the half. NIACC did have a strong third quarter, but Northeast played more efficient ball in the fourth quarter when the game was still up for grabs.

Svehla said, “In the fourth quarter, we stepped it up defensively and our ball movement and clock management was good. This was a good win versus a good team."

Neal led Northeast with 21 points, while Baylor contributed 12. Lauren Hunstad had nine points while Sierra Bell and Irene Sanz had eight points each. Shayley Vesel led NICC with 15 points.

Northeast will face host Iowa Central on Saturday at 4 p.m.
