Hawks women's soccer defeats Hawkeye 2-1 in 2OT

NORFOLK, NE - The Northeast Community College women's soccer team emerged victorious in their final regular season home game here Saturday, defeating Hawkeye Community College 2-1 in double overtime.

"I felt we started off the game really well," said Chad Miller, Hawks coach. "We moved the ball well, controlled the flow of the game and kept a good majority of the possession. We were going against the wind in the first half, so that made it difficult to capitalize."

Hawkeye scored the first goal of the game from a shot about 30 yards out to bring the halftime score to 1-0.

In the second half, Northeast had the wind behind them. About four minutes in, Riley Johnson received a pass from Valentina Haboush and put a shot past the goalie to tie the game. Late in the second half, Alexis Wemhoff made a save for the Hawks to take the game into overtime.

A scoreless first overtime led to a second, where four minutes in, Hailey Curry passed the ball to Haboush, who scored with a shot to the corner to win the game.

Northeast recorded 17 shots and seven shots on goal, while Hawkeye had ten shots and six shots on goal. Wemhoff had five saves for Northeast.

"I felt we played pretty well," Miller said. "There were maybe ten minutes in the second half where we might have played tired, but after that, I felt we controlled the ball better. And scoring in the second overtime against the wind was great for us. Key players like Alexis stepped up and played big roles. That's what makes this team great."

Northeast (11-5-1) will host a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XI playoff game on Sunday, October 29 at Veterans Memorial Field in Norfolk. Time is to be announced.
