Former student earns state broadcasting scholarship

LA VISTA, NE – A former Northeast Community College student is among 13 college students from across Nebraska to have earned a scholarship from a state broadcasting organization. Megan Kass, Scotland, SD, received the $500 scholarship from the Nebraska Broadcasters Association (NBA) Foundation. She and the other recipients were recognized during the organization’s annual meeting here recently.

Kass graduated from Northeast in May and plans to transfer to Southeast Tech in Sioux Falls to major in an information technology-related field with the hope of becoming a network manager for a media outlet.

“I am very proud of Megan. This is a true indicator of her hard work,” said Brian Anderson, broadcasting instructor at Northeast. “She displayed a high level of dedication to learning the art of broadcasting while she attended Northeast Community College. Megan also served as an outstanding leader among our student station staff members and in the classroom. These are the types of qualities that broadcast employers are looking for."

The NBA Foundation awarded $28,500 in college scholarships to students pursuing an education that will allow them to achieve a successful career in broadcasting. Recipients were selected by the broadcast faculty of their respective institutions.

The broadcasting-radio TV concentration at Northeast Community College is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the broadcasting, television and related industries. Graduates’ skills include radio production and announcing, television production and announcing, newswriting and gathering, scriptwriting, station operations, and broadcast sales.

Broadcasting students build hands-on skills by creating radio and TV programming which is distributed on Northeast Community College’s cable TV channel KHWK/Hawk TV. Career opportunities include audio/video operations, control room technician, station manager, radio and TV announcer, journalist, reporter, and broadcast technician.
