Nucor Invests in Youth Robotics to Inspire Future STEM Leaders

NORFOLK, Neb. - Nucor is strengthening its commitment to youth robotics and STEM education through its support of the Northeast iHub and local robotics programs, helping students develop skills that can lead to future careers in technology, manufacturing, and engineering.

Nucor has invested $250,000 in the Northeast iHub and sponsored its first robotics team four years ago, with their support growing to seven teams today. These robotics teams utilize the facility's state-of-the-art resources. The company views robotics as a powerful way to introduce young people to STEM fields while helping them envision career opportunities close to home.

"Robotics is an opportunity to show kids a path into STEM careers and a way to stay in the local area to work after graduating," said Johanna Threm, vice president and manager of Nucor Steel Norfolk. "Nucor’s support of youth robotics teams is part of its effort to encourage more students to explore technology and innovation."

The Northeast iHub provides students with access to robotics competition spaces, industrial robotics equipment, and rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printers and laser engravers. According to iHub Director Erin Sharpe, the facility design allows students to see how the same skills they use in robotics competitions are applied in real-world production environments.

“One of my colleagues describes the iHub youth robotics lab as a gathering place for kids who love STEM. And, what students learn as a part of a robotics team can lead to well-paying jobs and a rewarding career,” said Threm.

Beyond building robots, students gain experience in problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking, skills that are increasingly valuable in today's workforce. Through its support of robotics programs, Nucor is helping create pathways that prepare young people for high-demand careers while strengthening the future workforce of Northeast Nebraska.
