NORFOLK, Neb. – What begins as a civilized conversation between two sets of parents quickly becomes anything but in Norfolk Community Theatre’s upcoming production of God of Carnage, presented in partnership with Northeast Community College.
Written by French playwright Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton, God of Carnage won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Play. The dark comedy centers on two couples who meet to discuss a playground altercation between their 11-year-old sons. The parents intend to calmly discuss what happened and resolve the situation like responsible adults.
Their good intentions don’t last long.
As the conversation progresses, politeness gives way to accusations, shifting alliances and personal insults. Before long, the adults find themselves behaving worse than the children whose actions brought them together in the first place.
The production is directed by Brittany Lechner and features Adam Peterson, Libby McKay, Ashley Brown and Tom Wilson.
Northeast Community College Theatre students are also involved behind the scenes as members of the production and design team, providing them with hands-on experience in bringing a theatrical production to the stage while working alongside members of the local theatre community.
Performances will be held at ArtWorks, 320 W. Norfolk Ave. in downtown Norfolk. Performances on Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8-10, will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students. Strong language and adult themes.
