NORFOLK, Neb. – Tina Mazuch, director of the Health Information Management Systems program at Northeast Community College, has been appointed by Gov. Jim Pillen to serve on the Nebraska Health Information Technology (HIT) Board as a representative of the health information management profession.
The Nebraska HIT Board provides oversight and guidance for the collection, exchange, use and protection of healthcare information in Nebraska. Among its responsibilities are establishing criteria for data collection and distribution by the statewide health information exchange and prescription drug monitoring program, evaluating technology standards, and providing governance to help ensure health information is accessed, used and disclosed in accordance with HIPAA privacy and security protections.
State law specifically provides for a credentialed health information management professional to serve on the board. Members in most positions are appointed by the governor with approval of a majority of the Nebraska Legislature
Mazuch said the appointment provides an opportunity to bring the perspective of the health information management profession to statewide conversations about healthcare data and technology.
“I am honored to represent the health information management profession on the Nebraska Health Information Technology Board,” Mazuch said. “Health information professionals play an important role in ensuring healthcare data is accurate, accessible, secure and used effectively. I look forward to contributing my experience and perspective as the board works to strengthen health information practices across Nebraska.”
Mazuch’s appointment also provides a connection between her work at Northeast Community College and the evolving needs of Nebraska’s healthcare industry. As director of the college’s Health Information Management Systems program, she helps prepare students for careers in a field at the intersection of healthcare, information management and technology.
The Nebraska Legislature created the HIT Board in 2020 through LB 1183, the Population Health Information Act. CyncHealth, Nebraska’s statutorily designated statewide health information exchange, is charged with administering the board.
