NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College Board of Governors approved the College's 2026-27 operating budget during its September 24 meeting.
The 2026-27 budget was developed amid continued funding challenges for Nebraska's community colleges. Northeast will receive $788,209 less in state aid for the upcoming fiscal year, marking the third consecutive year of declining state support.
The approved 2026-27 tax supported budget totals $80,003,543 including:
- $59,986,091 in operating expenses
- $20,017,452 in building improvements
"The 2026-27 budget reflects Northeast's continued commitment to providing high-quality, affordable education while responding to the needs of students, employers, and communities across northeast and north central Nebraska," said Leah Barrett, president of Northeast Community College. "This budget positions the College to invest strategically in student learning and support services while remaining fiscally responsible."
The budget supports instructional programs, student services, workforce training, technology infrastructure, facility maintenance and improvements, and other strategic priorities aligned with the College's mission. While continuing these investments, Northeast has kept its all-funds budget essentially flat, with an increase of less than one-tenth of 1% from the previous year.
Board Chairperson Donovan Ellis said the approved budget balances long-term financial sustainability with the College's commitment to serving students and communities.
"The Board of Governors takes its fiscal responsibilities seriously," Ellis said. "This budget reflects thoughtful planning and while ensuring Northeast is positioned to meet the educational and workforce needs of our region today and into the future."
Northeast serves more than 14,000 students each year through campuses in Norfolk, O’Neill, South Sioux City, West Point, and beyond, as well as through online and regional learning opportunities. The board approved the budget unanimously.
