NORFOLK, Neb. – Northeast Community College will welcome award-winning Nebraska author, artist and storyteller Barbara Salvatore for its Visiting Writers Series on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Union 73, Union Coffee, on the Norfolk campus.
The free event is open to students, employees and community members and will feature a reading and discussion with Salvatore, whose historical fiction explores the histories and cultures of Nebraska's Indigenous and immigrant communities.
Salvatore is the author of Big Horse Woman, an award-winning novel about a Ponca woman born along the Niobrara River in 1833. The book has received national recognition, including the National Indie Excellence® Award and a Global Book Award for Historical Fiction. Her second novel, Magghie, follows a young woman from a German settler family whose life is transformed by the westward migration of the mid-1800s.
Committed to historical and cultural authenticity, Salvatore studied the Ponca language and later served as a Ponca Language Educator for the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska while researching and writing Big Horse Woman.
A graduate of New York's School of Visual Arts, Salvatore is also an accomplished artist whose work has been exhibited in Nebraska and New York. Her writing and artwork have appeared in numerous literary journals, anthologies and regional publications.
In addition to her creative work, Salvatore is a practicing herbalist and horse keeper who teaches classes on plant medicine and horse care. These interests often influence the stories she tells and the characters she creates.
Known for her engaging public readings, Salvatore brings her novels to life through vivid performances rich in language, imagery and historical detail.
The Visiting Writers Series connects Northeast students and community members with accomplished writers and the stories that shape our understanding of culture, history and the human experience.
