Today, the Aspen Institute (Aspen) named Northeast Community College as one of 25 semifinalists for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. Rooted in deep research and backed by $1 million in award money, the Aspen Prize is the nation’s signature recognition of community colleges that deliver value for their students.
Selected from nearly 1,000 public community colleges across the country, Northeast was recognized for its strong and improving results in student completion, transfer, and workforce outcomes, as well as collegewide practices that support students from entry through post‑graduation success.
“Being named an Aspen Prize semifinalist affirms what we see every day at Northeast, the impact of a collegewide culture focused on student success and clear pathways to employment and further education,” said Leah Barrett, president of Northeast. “This recognition belongs to our faculty and staff who work with our students, to ensure that a Northeast education leads to strong careers and economic mobility.”
The 25 Aspen Prize semifinalists represent community colleges from 20 states and were selected based on extensive review of longitudinal data and narrative applications evaluated by a national panel of higher education experts. Northeast’s submission highlighted its guided pathways framework, mandatory advising model, expanded dual‑credit access, innovative educational practices, and strong employer partnerships as key drivers of its outcomes.
“We start every cycle of the Aspen Prize with a simple question: Which community colleges are best at helping students achieve outcomes that truly matter for their lives?” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “The colleges advancing as semifinalists, like Northeast Community College, demonstrate strong and improving results and a deep commitment to ensuring students succeed both during college and after graduation.”
The Aspen Prize is awarded every two years. Ten finalists will be announced in June 2026. The finalist colleges will then participate in comprehensive site visits and additional data review before the 2027 Aspen Prize winner is announced in April 2027.
