Northeast Community College’s Nursing Program continues to demonstrate steady enrollment demand, strong student success, and meaningful impact on Nebraska’s healthcare workforce, according to recent multi-year data.
On Thursday, April 9, the nursing program was presented to the Northeast Community College Board of Governors for a continuation of the nursing program, with approval sought for submission to and consideration by the Nebraska Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education (CCPE).
Interest in the program remains strong, with 134 completed applications received for the upcoming academic year. Following a competitive selection process, Northeast anticipates enrolling 61 new students for approximately 108 Practical Nursing and Associate Degree nursing students for the 2026–27 academic year, consistent with long-term enrollment averages. Over the past seven years, Northeast has graduated 271 practical nursing students and 302 associate degree nursing students.
Despite the rigor of a nursing education and the demands of coursework, labs, clinical hours, and employment, student outcomes remain strong. On average, 90% of Practical Nursing students continue their education with Northeast to pursue their associate degree nursing (ADN).
In 2025, Northeast Community College nursing graduates achieved strong National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) outcomes, with a 91% pass rate for Practical Nursing students and a 94% pass rate for Registered Nursing students, surpassing both state and national averages.
“Our nursing program continues to deliver strong outcomes because of the dedication of our students, faculty, and clinical partners,” said Dr. Karen Weidner, director of nursing programs at Northeast Community College. “With high retention and licensure pass rates, and growing interest in the program, we are preparing graduates who are ready to meet the healthcare needs of our communities and make an immediate impact in the workforce.”
To support high-quality instruction, Northeast continues to invest in advanced simulation technology, including high- and low-fidelity manikins, virtual reality tools, and AI-enhanced clinical scenarios, allowing students to practice complex skills before entering clinical settings.
Expanded clinical partnerships also provide students with experience in both large medical centers and critical access hospitals, helping prepare graduates for diverse healthcare environments while supporting rural communities. Employers consistently report positive feedback on Northeast nursing graduates, citing professionalism, preparedness, and clinical competence.
With consistent enrollment, high licensure pass rates, and strong employer demand, Northeast’s nursing program continues to play a vital role in addressing healthcare workforce needs while preparing students for the future of nursing.
The board unanimously approved the continuation of the nursing program.
