What began as a desire to better support her family has grown into a powerful education journey for Adriana Romo Munoz, a Northeast Community College student who is now pursuing a college degree after completing English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and earning her GED through the College’s adult education program.
Born and raised in a small town in Mexico, Romo Munoz grew up surrounded by close family ties and a love of learning. While she completed only middle school before leaving formal education, moving to the United States opened a new door.
“When I moved to the United States, I saw an opportunity to return to school, not only to continue my education, but also to learn a new language,” Romo Munoz said.
Her initial motivation to learn English was deeply practical: helping her children with homework, communicating with teachers, and gaining confidence in everyday situations. However, returning to school was not without challenges.
“I was nervous and unsure of myself,” Romo Munoz said. “Balancing family responsibilities, work, and school was also challenging. I quit a couple of times, but I reminded myself that giving up was not enough and that I needed to continue.”
Through Northeast’s adult education ESL classes, Romo Munoz found encouragement and support that helped her persist. She credits patient teachers, supportive classmates, and milestone moments. When she realized she could better understand and speak English, it became a key factor in building her confidence.
“Learning English changed my life,” she said. “I became more confident speaking with others, making phone calls, helping my children, and participating in my community.”
After completing ESL coursework, Romo Munoz set her sights on earning a GED, motivated by a desire to create more opportunities and set an example for her children. Studying late at night and leaning on family support, she persevered through challenging subjects like math and writing.
“When I passed those sections, I felt proud of myself and realized how much I had grown,” Romo Munoz said.
Today, Romo Munoz is taking college classes at Northeast Community College, pursuing a degree in early childhood education, a field she chose out of a passion for working with children and making a positive impact early in their lives.
“It feels amazing,” she said. “I always knew I would find a way to take college classes, and now I am doing it. I feel proud of myself and excited about what comes next.”
She credits her husband, family, teachers, and classmates for supporting her along the way, along with personal strengths such as perseverance, determination, patience, and a love of learning.
Her message to other adults considering returning to school is simple and encouraging. “It’s never too late to start,” Romo Munoz said. “If you stay committed and believe in yourself, you can achieve your goals. You will gain knowledge, confidence, and opportunities to grow in all areas of your life.”
