April is Community College Month, a statewide and national recognition of the vital role community colleges play in expanding access to education, strengthening local economies, and preparing students for in‑demand careers. For Northeast Community College, the observance highlights the college’s deep commitment to students and to the 20‑county region it serves across northeast Nebraska.

As a public, open‑access institution, Northeast provides affordable, high‑quality education and training close to home, from academic transfer pathways and career and technical programs to short‑term workforce credentials, adult education, and customized training for employers. Through strong partnerships with schools, businesses, healthcare providers, and community organizations, Northeast helps students of all backgrounds gain the skills they need to succeed while supporting the region’s long‑term vitality.

“Community colleges are about opportunity,” said Leah Barrett, president of Northeast Community College. “At Northeast, our focus is on meeting students where they are, supporting them every step of the way, and helping them turn education into meaningful careers, stronger families, and thriving communities across our entire region.”

Northeast serves as a workforce partner for its 20‑county service area, aligning programs with regional labor needs and working closely with employers in agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, skilled trades, and emerging industries. Through degree programs, short‑term training, and apprenticeships, the college helps employers develop skilled talent locally while providing students with clear pathways to stable, well‑paying careers.

“Our mission is inseparable from the success of northeast Nebraska,” Barrett said. “When we partner with employers and communities, we’re not just educating individuals, we’re strengthening the entire region by preparing the workforce that keeps local businesses, healthcare systems, and communities moving forward.”

At a time of heightened skepticism about the cost of higher education, community colleges stand out for delivering results, and Northeast exemplifies that value. With dramatically lower tuition, strong career and transfer success, industry‑aligned programming, and proven labor‑market outcomes, Northeast provides pathways that are both affordable and effective.

That focus on results has earned Northeast national recognition from the Aspen Institute, which named the college a Top 200 U.S. Community College for excellence in student success, workforce development, and economic mobility.

“Every success story at Northeast reflects the power of community colleges to change lives,” Barrett said. “This month, we celebrate our students and the communities that believe in education as a pathway to opportunity, resilience, and a stronger future for our region.”
