Sage Fernau

Sage Fernau of Leigh is completing her associate's degree in Social Work at Northeast Community College.

After graduating this May, she will transfer to the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Her career goal is to become a substance abuse counselor where she can utilize her skills to help people on a personal level.

Fernau is an active member of TRIO, taking advantage of the events and resources that are offered throughout the school year. She was one of 10 students to attend TRIO’s first trip outside of the country to Costa Rica.

In addition to being a part of the TRIO program, she is involved in the Student Activities Counsel on campus as well.

When asked the question, “Who inspires you the most?” she replied, “My mom.” She shared that despite all the hardship her mother has faced, she finds ways to help other people.

“She puts others first and works really hard,” Fernau said.

She credits her mom with inspiring and pushing her to pursue her dreams. Her grandma Kathy, siblings, and TRIO advisors have also been her biggest cheerleaders and supporters along the way.

One staff member on campus that she would like to recognize in particular is Lori Trowbridge. “She is always excited to see (her) and just excited about things each day.”

One of her instructors, Jon Barnes, had this to say about Fernau.

“Sage is an invested student who cares about people.  She's thoughtful in her considerations of interacting with and serving others.  She shows determination for learning unfamiliar concepts and processes.  Her zeal for life shows through her personality.”

TRIO is proud to recognize Sage Fernau as their student of the month. Her dedication, involvement, and impact on others around her is an inspiration for her peers and generations of TRIO students to come.
