Chance Rohlk, Faculty Award Winner

Chance Rohlk exemplifies the core values of Northeast Community College — selflessness, innovation and an unwavering commitment to student success.

The welding instructor at the South Sioux City Extended Campus is helping to shape the future of technical education, creating opportunities for underserved students. It was for those reasons and more that Rohlk was named the US Bank Great Performance Faculty Member winner.

Leah Barrett, Northeast president, presented him with the award, which also included $250. Barrett outlined some of his qualities, including a commitment to students and his drive to grow the South Sioux City campus.

“When presented with the idea of opening our welding diploma program to high school seniors, he did not hesitate — he embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and immediately began developing solutions,” Barrett said. “He spent time at the high school, built relationships with instructors and students, and worked to remove barriers by securing access to textbooks and tools. Today, those students are thriving in his classes, and he continues to support them beyond welding instruction — helping with math homework and encouraging them when challenges arise.”

Rohlk was nominated by Brad Ranslem, Northeast dean of Applied Technology.

The South Sioux City Welding program has reached its highest enrollment in years, with up to eight high school students on track to graduate with a welding diploma in this inaugural year.

Rohlk played a key role in redesigning the South Sioux City Industrial Building, contributing to a student‑centered layout that increases program capacity. He has actively participated in listening sessions, collaborated with community partners, and consistently shown flexibility and creativity.

His philosophy is straightforward: “I don’t care what my schedule is — only that I can offer welding to as many students as possible.”

This mindset reflects his strong commitment to student success and community impact.
