9 to 5 Dress Rehearsal

Gender roles and office work have come a long way for those old enough to remember life in the 1970s and earlier.

For those who need proof, relive the drama of when Doralee Rhodes and the secretaries turned the tables on their chauvinistic and sexually harassing boss, Franklin Hart, as the Northeast/Norfolk Community Theatre will bring the classic, "9 to 5," to the stage.

Libby McKay is the director, and reflected on how things have been going during dress rehearsals at the start of the week.

“The first dress rehearsal is always a little full of surprises, but by the time you get to the final dress, it seems like, ‘We never had any issues.’  That’s the magic of theater,” McKay said.

So, is this the same fun story as the classic movie?

“It is, with a few adaptations for the stage. It’s the same fun movie that looks at a topic that can be difficult to deal with, and you hope none of this thing is actually happening now. It has a lot of humor, heart and friendship at the core of it.”

Performances will be Thursday to Saturday, December 4-6, at 7:30 p.m. each day, along with a matinee on Sunday, Dec. 7, at 1:30 p.m. Performances are at the Cox Activities Center Theatre. This is the 45th anniversary since the movie came out.

Several Northeast employees are either performing or assisting with props, costumes and more. McKay said the partnership that Norfolk Community Theatre has with Northeast works well and is being showcased from props to actors.

For ticket information, please contact Norfolk Community Theatre, nctheatre.org, 402-258-3782. Early in the week, about half of the tickets were sold for each of the performances.

And like the movie, the play would probably get a rating of PG.

Overbearing Boss

The next Northeast/Norfolk Community Theatre production, “9 to 5,” opens this week, some 45 years after when the movie starring Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin opened. The play will be performed from Thursday to Sunday, December 4-7, at the Cox Activities Center Theater. (Northeast Community College)
