One of the principles of journalism is that good reporters should know their subject.
Kristen Sindelar does that, as backed by the facts that were shared during the AgCeptional Women’s Conference on Friday, November 21, at the Lifelong Learning Center on the Northeast Community College campus. Sindelar was presented with the AgCeptional Spotlight Award.
"Kristen's love for agriculture runs deep," said Joan Ruskamp, who was emcee for the event. "Growing up on a diversified, multigenerational farm in Northeast Nebraska, she learned early what it means to care for animals, nurture the land, and work alongside family. Today, Kristen and her husband Randy raise beef cattle near Clarkson, Nebraska, where she also tends to a large garden, grows her own poultry, and preserves much of the food she produces. Her commitment to rural living is matched only by her passion for sharing its story."
Ruskamp noted that many of those attending the conference knew Sindelar through her writing for the Midwest Messenger. She travels the countryside searching for the people, practices, and innovations that showcase the richness of rural America. Through her storytelling, she helps readers understand and appreciate agricultural life—past, present, and future.
Sindelar was surprised with the award a few months ago in a video shown on the big screens at the Lifelong Learning Center on Friday morning. She was later joined onstage by her family and friends.
"Don't be afraid to tell your story and never underestimate the power of your words," Sindelar said after receiving the award.
A former 4-H member and later a 4-H assistant in Madison County, Sindelar continues to give back by helping with livestock projects, supporting county fair activities, and presenting at Ag Literacy programs. She also serves as an Ag Pen Pal with the Farm Bureau, connecting with classrooms to teach children about life on the farm.
She is a multi-talented—a seamstress, a past “Make It with Wool” award winner, a mentor to young sewists, a county and state fair judge, and a piano teacher who shares her gifts with her local church.
Through her writing, advocacy, teaching, and service, Sindelar has become a powerful voice for agriculture. She bridges the gap between rural and urban communities.
