High Achieving Students

Some academically motivated and engaged students at Northeast Community College were welcomed this month into a scholarship program sponsored by the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation.

Twenty-four students were welcomed as First-year Scott Scholars, enabling them to take advantage of regular academic and social activities. The program also provides scholarship funds, helping students to develop close friendships with fellow Scott Scholars, and take advantage of cultural enrichment activities through field trips and guest speakers, among other things.

Lisa Goodwin of Omaha, assistant director of Education for the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation, welcomed the students and told them to reach out if they need anything.

The encouragement was offered during the fall kick-off dinner at the Lifelong Learning Center.

“We see you and believe in you. We are going to cheer you on every step of the way. We will do whatever we can do within our power to connect you with the right people to help you through the tough times or whatever you need,” Goodwin said.

She said the students will get out of the program whatever they put into it.

“It could be life changing,” Goodwin said.

Calvin Sisson of Omaha, president & CEO of the Suzanne & Walter Scott Foundation, shared some background on Walter Scott Jr., including his desire to improve the lives of everyone. Mr. Scott was always interested in talking to young people, and pursued knowledge in every situation.

Jessi Doke of Norfolk, a professional coach and founder of Mind Set Go Coaching, was the keynote speaker. Doke provided inspiration, encouraging the students to think about what they want to do with their lives and who they want to be.

The formula is simple but the work is hard, she said. That includes taking “radical responsibility” for oneself by taking the steps necessary to get to where one wants to go. It also is important to reflect, and if one is doing something that takes them from their goal, they should eliminate the behavior.

Kara Woehler is the director of the Scott Pathway Scholarship Program at Northeast, now in its second year.
